Signs and Symptoms You're PregnantWe surveyed our pregnant friends for some signs and symptoms that they were with child. Here were the most popular findings. We surveyed our pregnant friends for some signs and symptoms that they were with child. Here were the most popular findings. Mood swings. Not everyone reported this surge in hormones (although their husbands did), but many women experienced mood swings similar to Premenstrual Syndrome -- except much more severe. Crying, followed by irrational anger, then laughing hysterically ten minutes later -- all were seen (especially by husbands) as the very first sign that something was definitely wacky. Just a "feeling." Although not everyone reported this, but several women noticed the difference. Audrey says: " I just knew it within the first week. I did not feel like my normal self, something felt 'off'. There's no other way to explain it." Tender breasts. Again, just like PMS, except more severe. Our friends reported such extreme cases as refusing to wear a shirt to bed (nipples were so sensitive) and slapping their husbands right across the mouth when they tried to touch their new and engorged playthings. Food cravings. The books will tell you this doesn't happen until a few weeks (or months) later, but women do report a sudden shift in what they find appetizing. A girlfriend states: "I was so sick from weeks 6-12, all that sounded good to me were oranges. Lots and lots of them. I kept a bag of them by my desk." Fatigue. Make that extreme fatigue, the most tired you've ever been, or as our friend Alison puts it, "Pregnancy narcolepsy". If you're feeling exhausted from your regular routine, you may indeed be in the family way. Implantation bleeding or spotting According to doctors, eight days after ovulation you might experience some light spotting with cramps, or a spotty blood at the time when your period should be there. Morning sickness. Or, let's be real, just sickness. Queaziness that can last morning, noon, and night. Donna recalls: "It's a different feeling from having the flu, it feels like seasickness or motion sickness." Frequent urination. Doctors told Annie that the surge of the hormone HCG might make her urinate more frequently. "Yeah, you could say frequently! I would get up and go in the middle of the night THREE TIMES!" Darkening areolas. The area around your nipples notoriously gets darker once you have conceived. Missed period. Ah, the nervous mother of all pregnancy signs. If you've been meticulously keeping track of your cycle, a couple of days after ol' Aunt Flo doesn't show up, it's time to take that test. Positive test. The home pregnancy test is a pretty accurate way to tell if all these other symptoms were leading to something conclusive. If you get two lines, better head on over to your doctor's office to confirm it! |
