Everything you put in your body is connected to your ability to conceive! Whether it should or shouldn't go in, begin today by plunging into (what will become) your pregnancy diet.

Doctors and health professionals recommend beginning your clean livin' lifestyle anywhere from three months to a year before you being trying to conceive. Ensuring your best body for your baby will improve fertility and descrease the risks of miscarriage and birth defects. It's all worth it.

Prepregnancy Diet and Lifestyle Choices

Stick to a healthy, balanced diet. Use the USDA's food pyramid as your guide, and be sure to get full on green and leafy vegetables, lean proteins, milk, and whole grains.

Achieve a healthy weight. Whether you're under or over weight, those extremes on either side of normal can put strain on your body, making it more difficult to conceive. If you're planning on losing weight before you conceive, check with your doctor for a slow and healthy plan to do so.

Cut back or cut out the caffeine. The yummy pick-me-up found in coffee, soda, and chocolate is linked to both infertility problems and increased risk of miscarriage.

Cut back or cut out the alcohol. Ask your doctor about how much is too much when you're preparing your body to conceive.

Get 400 micrograms of folic acid a day. Whether you're getting it from a daily over-the-counter supplement or your doctor prescribes prenatal vitamins, folic acid is a recommendation for all women of child bearing age. Known to decrease some birth defects, this B vitamin can also be found naturally in green and leafy vegetables, whole grains, and breads and cereals that have been fortified.

Don't smoke, and don't use recreational drugs. We all know that smoking is bad for you, but it's worse for your baby. Get help if you can't quit on your own, because smoking is no way to begin your pregnancy.

Exercise every day. Do something: walk, practice yoga, ride your bike, swim. Start a program now to ensure it's habit by the time you're pregnant.

Get a total physical from your doctor. Take those routine tests again, just to make sure everything is in tip-top shape to be a baby home for 9 months.

Unwind and de-stress. Meditate, work in the garden, watch TV - whatever you enjoy that helps you to release stress, increase your fertility and improve your life. When you have your baby, stress coping skills are going to come in handy much more!
